Christmas night
I know not many of you are out there reading the blog. But- oh what the hell- I will take this opportunity and space to share some thoughts, especially about Christmas and this whole season.
Always a challenging time of year and every year it seems harder to find real inspiration that connects me to something meaningful and alive- something that will feed my soul. We are in the 12 Holy Nights now. Yesterday was “Adam and Eve’s Day”—an honoring of those great progenitors. Beginning in innocence. That was technically the first Holy Night (if you count 13 nights and end with Epiphany on Jan 6th). I know there are many ways to look at this. So whatever turns you on! But here is one way I have used that I find useful and not too demanding.
Begin today with the sign Sagittarius—because the Sun is actually in front of the constellation of the Archer right now. What I do is go back to last Dec. It can be Dec. 16th which is usually the beginning of Sag. (sidereally). Or you can go back to all of Dec.- of last year, right? And do a review. I keep a journal. I just reread most of what I wrote in Dec. last year. One year ago this month. If you don’t keep a journal you can look back at you calendar, day-runner (what have you) just to be reminded of what you were doing back then.
It was surprising to me to see how much has changed in this past year. I see some deep internal changes. For the better! It feels good to review. And to contemplate what all has changed. Life goes by so fast--- we need time to integrate (a virtue of the Bull- Taurus)—chew your cud and all that.
Tomorrow is about Jan./Capricorn (the Goat). And so forth through the zodiac. You can use the Virtues that correspond to each sign (Robert Sardello has done such good work on the virtues if you have his writings). Capricorn is “The courage to redeem what has gone wrong”. Chew on that for awhile!!! Or do whatever comes to you. Just stay focused through the Zodiac as we go through the 12 Holy Nights. I guess I assume that everyone knows the progression of the signs (Aries-Taurus-Gemini-Cancer-Leo-Virgo-Libra-Scorpio-Sagittarius-Capricorn-Aquarius-Pisces).
Also you can do a projecting forward of your intentions for the following Jan. (or whatever month it is). That always sounds nice—but in practice I can’t really do it that way. My “intentions” don’t divide up neatly according to the months. But maybe some people can.
When I lived in Boulder I had a friend who was also deeply fascinated with the calendar—Claudia McClaren (any of you know her?). We really talked together before and during the Holy Nights and shared what happened to us. We prepared for it! And this one year we both had major insights/dreams/inspirations that came through during the Holy Nights. It helped that we talked. I remember her vision was about “the inner-net”—a sort of opposite-from-virtual-reality internet. Mine was an image of a calendar which I went on to build.
But first…..winter dragged on that year and spring was slow. Come about March sometime, Claudia and I remembered about our Holy Nights pact. But then we realized that we each had forgotten what our inspirations were! Strangely…and fortunately…I had remembered hers! And she has remembered mine! So in the end they were saved.
But that’s how it goes. What comes through in these precious Nights which are outside of time somehow…..are otherworldly and ephemeral. It takes a community to hold them. As the Sun increases and we are drawn up and out into the Spring time we forget so much. It’s just how it is.
Last Holy Nights I was in a real crisis/disaster with a women’s group I had been in. I was scape-goated. A real live true scapegoating and I was the scapegoat. It was so painful and disturbing. But somehow…..something came through and helped me to “pop out”. To not take up the role of scapegoat. And it worked. I have been helped by that insight/help throughout this whole year. (The group failed, but probably was going to anyway).
I think it would be so great if people could write here about whatever “comes through”. Like Sandy said when she started this---- it will be a record.
I don’t think the Holy Nights are always easy (how’s that for an understatement!!). There is such Mystery all around us. My wish is always to have a community of like minded souls who did actually share their inner dreams and experiences during this time. And what would even be greater would be to prepare for next year. Make a plan. Agree on a way to do it. Just a thought.
Well I do hope and pray that Christmas was a beautiful day for all of you.
I welcome your thoughts.

The Dark- try again
Fellow Blogginis—
As we approach Christmas, I know I for one, need to reach hard under the bed and pull out the Treasure Box of images and Inspirations and refresh my memory about this season, so I can go into it in a good way (you know?). I thought I would share a few (mental) pictures with you. Tell me what you think. This is a BLOG, isn’t it?
I am surrounded by Madonna pictures now (that helps). But who is this Sophia Being? How do I think about Her, feel Her? I work with a calendar of the seasons, that includes the 12 astrological seasons. It is a picture of a circle with Summer Solstice at the top, Winter at the bottom. We are approaching the bottom this week.
You know that picture of Sophia- the woman with the Sun in her Heart, a circle of 12 stars around her head…and standing with the Moon under her feet? THAT Moon is what I call the Moon-boat. As the Summer Solstice passes, it is Sophia who carries us all in her Moon-boat down the decline into Winter. We need her.
It is Sophia—so they say- who gets born again every Summer. She is the Mother who carries us down the long slow descent into fall and then winter, each day losing the influence of the Sun, each day living with increasing darkness. She was “conceived” at Easter, around the Spring Equinox. But she doesn’t come into her power until Summer Solstice. That’s when she picks us up in the Boat. And at the Winter Solstice, she gives birth (9 months)……..like she did. But also IN US. The Christ Being will then take us up the steep incline into Spring and towards Summer, where it all begins again.
We need her during this voyage. She knows we all have our inner Sun…..and we all have our inner darkness, our Beast, our shadow. And for everyone it is scary to go down into the Dark.
It is said that at the Winter Solstice and then Christmas eve, we have the opportunity to experience the Rebirth of Light. But that implies making friends with our inner Dark.
We rise by kneeling…………so they say.
And it is Sophia that guards us and cares for us. She more or less holds our hand as we approach this time of the year. “Don’t fear. You are with me”—that is what she says, if we can hear it.
Or do we get so busy, so distracted, so overwhelmed (yes is the answer to that question) and it becomes very challenging to even hear Sophia? Or recognize the terrain we are in. Yes yes yes. Damnitall
However, the images of the Madonna are fiercely nourishing now. Even if I can only hang out there for a few moments a day. I am reminded that I am being born a little bit each year—at this time—and she is my mother too.
I have been watching a documentary on the Monarchy of Great Britain- it’s a long, long, often bloody history. King after King….sons betraying their fathers, nations stealing everything from other nations. The quest for power. Lordy—it seems so insane. I know that this is the Patriarchy, the patriarchal way of being. It is a stage in development. It has to be. But aren’t we now trying to take the next step and move into the realm of Sophia and the great Feminine? I think so. Though it seems that not everybody is there yet. So it is all a bit of a mess.
To me, I think the key is that Sophia rules the descent. Into redemption. Into the New Birth. As women we have to honor the Dark. The Mystery. The Not-Knowing. The Christ-birth will come but we have to go into the Dark first.
P.S. Don’t Fall Into the Abyss!!!!! Go gently.
From Wendell Berry
To go into the dark with a light
Is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark
Go without sight
And find that the dark too

The stars are clouded by the snow
It hasn't snowed this hard in Jamestown since we moved here over a year ago. I used to visit Jamestown thirty years ago when I lived in RI the snow hardly stuck to the ground because it's an island in Narragansett Bay and the currents keep the land warm. But tonight Jamestown is competing with the mainland counting inches dropped wondering if it will melt in time for school.
John is stranded in Providence with his cousins they've been scouting locations for a film being shot here with Richard Gere and Joan Allen. It's kind of ironic we left RI so JT could pursue acting and now John has returned to RI and is working on films because it's the hot spots tax wise for making movies and it has good authentic locations.
I learned the other night that RI was formerly called Rogue Island because all the people who settled here lived on the edge of the emerging culture they wanted religious freedom or a safe haven from the law the name then changed to Rose Island for awhile and then we got stylish and renamed it Rhode from the Isle of Rhodes in Greece. No wonder I'm good at marketing!
I left RI around my first Saturn return and returned to RI around my second Saturn return. And I'm wondering what the stars have in store for me. Good starry night ladies.
